Don't set goals for the sake of it

It’s come to that time of year when the conversation around setting goals for 2021 is starting to rear its head...

Now I’m all for goal setting, in fact, it’s what one of my favourite programmes, ON IT (which has opened its doors today), revolves around.

But what I’m not for is setting goals for the sake of it.

You see, the aim isn’t to set a goal

The aim is to get closer to the big picture of your business

And a goal is how you do that

Goals without a wider purpose don’t make sense to me, which is why when it comes to a full year, I set intentions instead.

For me, annual intentions are about outlining where you want your business to be by the end of the year in a compelling yet somewhat vague way - compelling in how they motivate and excite you yet vague in how they’ll be achieved.

SO much can change in a year (hello the lesson of 2020) which is why I then get specific with quarterly goals, mapping out how I’ll be working towards that intention within a 3 month period.

And then the final (and arguably, most important) step is the action, aka how those goals are achieved. Setting a goal is nothing without outlining what steps you’ll be taking and staying accountable to when you'll be taking them.

This method, of staying focused on the big picture but flexible in how I’m going to get there, has genuinely changed the game for me. It’s something I preach to anyone in earshot and a method we follow through my ongoing group programme, ON IT…

ON IT - SET GOALS, STAY ACCOUNTABLE, TAKE ACTION

For the last 6 months I’ve been trialling a group programme with my past clients and having seen it have an immense impact on their ability to prioritise working ‘ON’ and move their businesses forward, it’s opening its doors!

Through a monthly Zoom call and curated accountability teams, ON IT gives you the prompts and accountability needed to stay focused on the big picture whilst taking regular action to get there.

FRIDAY LIVE - REFLECT ON 2020 WITH ME

One of the hardest parts of working ‘ON’ your business is knowing what that actually entails… which is why I'm hosting a LIVE this Friday to help you reflect on 2020.

Reviewing a full year can feel overwhelming at the best of times, let alone when it’s 2020, the year of the unexpected. If you’re keen to look back and reflect I’ll be hosting an Instagram LIVE on Friday 11th December at 3 pm, giving you the prompts and space to do exactly that. Put it in your schedule and get a pen/paper ready!

So there we have it - an insight into how I set goals and a couple of ways I can support you with that.

If I can leave you with one encouragement let it be to value working ON your business. I know it never feels urgent but whether it's 20 minutes, half a day or a full week, setting aside time to connect back to the big picture is truly what will move your business forward.

I’ll be back in a few weeks to share with you my final launch of 2020 which is something I’ve been working on for the last 8 months… and will absolutely help you to put this method of goal setting into place.

Until then, I’m cheering you on.
