Undermining our success stops others from seeing what’s possible and holds us back from pushing to the next level
When I bought this car at the end of last year I was so so excited and incredibly proud of my business for making it happen. But despite that, I shied away from sharing it online.
I worried that pausing to celebrate a win would stop me pushing for the next level. I hated the thought that it could be the cause of someone else’s comparison. I didn’t want to undermine the success that sits outside of tangible things. And overall, I was certain that the success of my business would be the failure of it.
I know it sounds backwards. And like a first world problem. But it all stems back to me believing that success is a dirty thing. And that owning your success, without caveats or reasoning, is wrong.
It’s a narrative I see play out ALL the time. We underplay our wins. We respond to praise with denial. And we follow up any form of celebration by omitting the role we played in it.
But why? Undermining our success stops others from seeing what’s possible and holds us back from pushing to the next level. So let’s change the narrative.
We know it comes from hard work. We know it sits alongside hardship. So let’s start owning our success, whatever that looks like. You with me?
